“Green” art?

February 5, 2008

Remember my previous post where I was all confused about a set of plants being encased in concrete and like wtf, what purpose does that show?

The homeowner finally responded on the original original post, stating,

Just to answer one question that seems to be disturbing to a few of you, or you are just curious about – those plants in concrete blocks!!! It’s an installation by a local artist. They are designed for the interior but with a Labrador and a 17 month old I didn’t think it would be a good idea! ‘Tis true they’re very odd and peculiar pieces…much like the artist! But they are also intriguing and his gist is that they are “green” plants; need very little water or tending to. Also the idea is no matter how small the space you live in you can have a mini garden. And it’s art folks! Because we know we can get the same thing from the Home Depot garden department but in a prettier presentation!

Thank you for the sweet response!

Okay, first of all. Morgana was right. It’s an art installation designed for the interior, made up of “green” plants that require little care.

What does that have to do with concrete? Plants grow, and pouring concrete around their base, thus restricting them from any sort of natural movement (Yes, plants move. They don’t stay in the same exact position forever. and I’m stating that because I have no idea about plants except they are pretty and sometimes I kill them). Even if they require little water, where is this water going to go? Clearly not at the top.

And hi, it’s great to promote the idea that no matter how small your living space is, there’s always room for a miniature garden. Very true. But setting a series of growing, living plants in CONCRETE BLOCKS (therefore, hard to move around, take up a lot of space, and impossible to care for) is pretty dumb. No, this isn’t about irony and art and our concrete jungle. This is just a W.O.S.

If you don’t know what that stands for, then read here.
