And the Oscar Goes To…

Plain cotton T-shirts!

While everyone is/should be rejoicing over the California Supreme Court knocking down the ban on same-sex marriages (WHEEEEEE), plain v-neck t-shirts and metallic lycra leggings are excitedly celebrating American Apparel’s Dov Charney winning the coveted title of “Retailer of the Year” at the 15th Annual Michael Awards.

Steve Shor, Founder and President of the Michael Awards, said, “In a surprisingly short period of time, American Apparel has distinguished itself as a truly unique and exciting retail brand in the global market. American Apparel’s high-quality, Made in USA clothing, together with the company’s progressive business practices and provocative advertising campaigns, have set the company apart as a fascinating story in the fashion world. For Dov Charney’s accomplishments as an entrepreneur and as the creative director behind American Apparel, we are honoring him as Retailer of the Year.” (link)

Whoa, really? Who knew that creating generic, blank clothing out of different blends of cotton and lyrca would win you such an innovative award. I guess they are celebrating the success of his retail business through his almost pornographic photographs, various sexual harassment cases/gossip while referring to his employees as bitches and whores and also being the trademark for annoying teenage hipsters with shaggy layered haircuts and annoying forehead bands. Yeah. I don’t get it.

Their stores are annoying (even though I did just spend $90 on a couple t-shirts there but I swear, I really needed it), their shirts are comfortable but really, do we want to condone this sort of behavior? No, I’m not talking about Charney’s grossness, or the fact that people are falling for generic, empty clothes. I’m talking about these teen hipsters. They’re everywhere, with their bright green tight jeans, oversized sunglasses and artsy Myspace self-portraits that they’ve digitally altered to look like they were taken with a polaroid camera. I’ve had it. No more.

I lost the point to this post, because I have to get food now. Goodbye.

  1. Superior plain tshirts can be found at Uniqlo. Each t-shirt is $5.95. Is there a Uniqlo in LA?

  2. NO.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO BRING UP THAT I CANNOT GET HERE?

  3. Y’know, for all I hear about American Apparel in the media, I really don’t want to shop there. And I don’t like lycra unless it’s my underwear.

  4. Can we talk about how every single American Apparel shirt I own (purchased before I heard about how sleezy Dov is) has fallen apart by now. I still own non-AA t-shirts from high school so I know this isn’t normal.
